After what has felt like a never-ending heat wave, pretty much everyone is looking forward to sweater weather.
With fall finally on the horizon, folks are starting to look toward the biggest fall trends so they can prepare for one of the trendiest seasons of the year.
Here to help is New York Fashion Week, which doesn’t officially start until Friday, September 9, 2022. Luckily, we’ve gotten a bit of a preview of what shoe trends will be big this fall and we think you’ll like what you see.
Of course, boots are always in. This year, designers are ditching the ankle boot in favor of tall, over-the-knee, and even pantaboots (aka boots that turn into pants). But make sure you keep some band-aids on hand because flat boots won’t be a big hit this season. At best, you might be able to find boots with a kitten heel, but don’t hedge your bets.
On top of that, prep is back in a big way. Preppy classics like oxfords, loafers, mary janes, and ballet flats are making a return. But just because brands are going-old school doesn’t mean the shoes are predictable. Designer brands like Miu Miu are putting a twist on the classic ballet flat, bringing us to the pinnacle of the balletcore trend. And Gucci is always there with the perfect loafer, regardless of gender identity.
A hold-over from summer trends includes platforms. Platform pumps are certainly the most popular but don’t count out platform oxfords because you’ll see quite a few of those as well. The Senior Marketing Editor at Net-a-Porter told Harper’s Bazaar,
“Sky-high platforms continued their ascent as a key trend for fall/winter 2022 across pumps, boots, and sandals — we anticipate these will be a mainstay for seasons to come.”
Another hold-over is fashion sneakers, which have become increasingly popular over the past year. Think the Gucci X Adidas collaboration, which dropped in June this year.
Lastly, don’t forget the artsy, fashion-forward shoes that can’t be categorized. Brands are feeling creative this season with slanted heels, new shapes and silhouettes, and more.

The brand will also continue on with its fashion sneakers, even after they leave its collaboration with Adidas behind. The brand has put together a collection of what they’ve dubbed Gucci Run sneakers that are as practical as they are stylish — a rarity in the fashion world.

In their FW 22 campaign, they paired the flats with a pair of schoolgirl socks to make the look cozier than ever.
